Detection of Nitrate ions using Capillary Zone Electrophoresis

Project type

Research & Development

Date

21 July - 18th November 2025

Location

Auckland

I designed a Capillary Zone Electrophoresis (CZE)–based nitrate sensing system for environmental water monitoring, focusing on creating a low-cost, portable, and reliable analytical solution. I applied the principles of electrophoresis and electroosmotic flow to design a system consisting of a fused-silica capillary, a high-voltage power supply, and an integrated optical detection unit using a UV-LED and photodiode for indirect nitrate measurement. I analysed and optimised key parameters such as buffer composition, sample preparation, applied voltage, and separation efficiency to achieve accurate and reproducible results. I also explored system miniaturisation and field deployment by developing a modular design with portable power integration and microfluidic concepts, enabling real-time, on-site water quality monitoring. This project demonstrates my ability to integrate analytical chemistry, electronics, and engineering design to develop a practical and scalable sensing system.
